introducing sports

This is the perfect time to start introducing sports to your child. Sports help a child stay physically fit and reduce their stress levels, they are also more likely to exercise as adults. Sports can teach lessons in teamwork and leadership as well as give a child a sense of belonging. Although all sports provide many health benefits, not every sport is for every child. Help your child explore their options and try a variety of sports until they find one they like. At this age, knowing the body’s natural reactions to exercise, like an increase in heart rate and the formation of sweat, is important to understanding how exercise keeps our bodies healthy. With an increase in activity, the importance of warming up and cooling down should be highlighted in order to prevent injury.

BODY systems

Now that children have an understanding of the anatomy of the body, it is the perfect time to teach them about the body systems and what each one does to keep their bodies running. Being able to recognize which parts of the body work with these systems is important in understanding how the body works all together as a whole unit. Major body systems include the circulatory system, the digestive system, the muscular system, the skeletal system, and the nervous system.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

This is the system that transports oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells through the blood. The heart serves as the pump to keep the blood transporting.

MUSCULAR SYSTEM

This is the system that contains all your muslces. There are three types of muscle. Smooth muscles are muscles that your brain controls without you thinking about it. Cardiac muscle is the muscle in the heart to keep blood pumping. Skeletal muscles are the muscles you control and give your body the power to exercise.

Sleep is needed in order to recover from everything that our bodies have done throughout the day, from waking up to going back to bed. Sleep not only rests our bodies but also our minds. After a long day of learning and playing, sleep is critical for a developing brain. Our body knows when it is time to sleep by the amount of light signals our brain receives. This is why it is so important to put away any electronics or screens at least an hour before bedtime. A dark area lets your body know it is time to rest. Our bodies go through 5 stages in a sleep cycle that is repeated around 5-6 times each night.
