Goal setting
A big topic to introduce to this age group is goal setting and working to improve health. Whether this be through physical activity, sleep, nutrition, or any other dimensions of health, goal setting is very important for a child’s development. Goals help children improve self-image and confidence and can increase awareness of strengths and weaknesses. Goals can help with visualization and keeps a child responsible for their plans. It helps with self-efficacy and the belief that they can do something if they put their minds to it. Encourage your child to make goals often and look back at them repeatedly so they are sure to be met or continuously worked toward.

HEALTHY PLATE
Introducing a healthy plate to children is important for encouraging good nutritious eating habits early on that will follow them throughout the rest of their lives. While we previously touched on some of the different food groups, now is a good time to go more in depth on what each food group provides to the body. Each food group has a different function which is why we need a little bit of each one to have a balanced diet. The goal of a healthy plate is to make it colorful and full of fruits and vegetables, this should fill about half the plate. The other half should be split between whole grains and healthy proteins. The last group left is dairy which can be used as a side along with water.

FUN in the sun
Although some sun exposure can be beneficial, too much can do more damage than good. Too much sun can cause damage to the skin, the eyes, and even the immune system. It is important to note that everyone needs sun protection, it can cause damage no matter the skin tone! The best way to protect your skin from sun exposure is to apply a generous amount of sunscreen and reapply often. The sun is the strongest from the hours of 10am-4pm, this is when you should be most covered up or staying inside. If you need to be outside, it is very important to wear a high SPF sunscreen and reapply about every hour or two. Wearing sunglasses or a hat is another good way to protect the eyes and the face from the detrimental effects of the sun. The sun is more harmful in the summer, if you live closer to the equator, and when you are at a higher altitude. UV rays can reflect of snow and water so when you are near either of these the need for sunscreen becomes greater.
