SEtting goals

Just like with physical health, setting goals is important for mental health as well. Encourage children to set goals and let them know that they are important to have and work towards. Setting a goal is just the first step, it is also important to highlight coming up with a plan to achieve those goals. Setting goals is important because it can increase motivation and gives a purpose to challenges. Making and following goals can also increase self-confidence and help a child adapt to new challenges.

SUPPORT SYstem

Mental health isn’t just about understanding thoughts and feelings that are happening within yourself, but also understanding environmental factors that can contribute to your mental health. Recognize positive and negative impacts on mental health. One of the biggest factors that influence the mental health of children is parents themselves. Children grow up mirroring parents so if there is poor mental health from a mentor it will trickle down to the child. Another important factor is peers and teachers your child surrounds themselves at with in a setting such as school. This is where they spend most of their day and have most of their interactions. Children need a dependable support system in order to properly deal with their mental health. Support systems include their family, teachers, peers, and community members. People in your child’s support system can be used for emotional support as well as showing up and being there for your child. Your child not only needs a solid support system, but they also need to feel as if they can go to these people when they need to talk.

NEEDS AND WANTS

The importance of distinguishing between needs and wants can introduce children to the idea of financial wellness and how it plays a part in overall health. In terms of mental health, the more wants a child will have the happier they may feel. There is a fine line that should be taught. Children should learn that happiness does not always come from goods that can be bought, sometimes it comes from things we already have that don’t cost a thing. Needs are things that you must have to live (food, water, shelter). Wants are fun to have or make life easier, but you don’t need them to survive.
